'Internet Doomsday'...FBI to shutdown the Internet July 9th?

Yes, the Internet will shut down for thousands of users on Monday, July 9th.  This is to happen when the FBI will shutdown their DNSChanger servers starting at 12:01am.  Why is the FBI doing this?  Well, this dates back a little over a year ago when a particalar Malware was installed on personal computers world-wide without the user even knowing.

The FBI were able to catch the hackers who were resonspible for the malware last year.  However, if they were to shutdown the servers that were affected with the malware, thousands of people would lose their internet connection.  So in the mean time, they place two new servers and kept the hacked servers up until there was a patch for the affected servers...the patch is here and will be applied Monday.

So what can you do find out you won't be one of the 30,000 - 70,000 that will be shutdown tomorrow?
The FBI has set up this website: http://www.dns-ok.us/  If you get green, you're good.  If you get red, you'll be redirected to get the malware uninstalled from your computer.

**NOTE: So people think this site, being set up by the FBI, will take your private information.  I do not know that for a fact, but if you don't want to be one of the computers shutdown, use it.  However, there are alternatives...check below.

What happens if you don't check your computer?  Well, if your computer is shutdown, you'll be waiting on the phone with your internet provider, waiting to get your internet back online...and we all know how much we hate that.  So avoid it all cause, and check your computer.  If you don't, Comcast and AT&T will have extra staff on-hand Monday to deal with the massive calls that will be coming in.

Alternative Malware detection sites:

New York Times reports that the most direct route possible is going to the FBI’s site, http://bit.ly/FBI-checker and enter your DNS information. The form is rather involved, however. Expect it to take some time in filling out.

McAfee has set up a site too: http://bit.ly/Mcafee-checker. It appears to work and it's super easy. If your computer is clear of malware, McAfee will congratulate you.

Qualys also has a checker set up. Users can go to this page, http://bit.ly/qualys-checker, and check for the DNS Changer Malware and any other problems that may be present on the PC.

Oregon's KVAL reports that Nerds on Call also has a page to check the DNS for malware. Head here http://www.callnerds.com/dns-changer/ to do a last-minute check of your computer.
