PC Tip #101 - System Restore

Today's topic: System Restore.

What is System Restore? System Restore is a Windows tool to help you restore your computer back to a time when it was working properly.  Makes sense, right?

So when would I need to use it?  Well, sometimes when downloading a new program/software or installing a Windows Update, it could make your PC run a bit slow or weird. So, you can use System Restore to return your PC back to a time when it was working great.  The great thing is, it won't affect any of  your document, pictures or other data.

How do I use it?  Follow these easy instructions. (These instruction pertain to Windows 7.  For instructions for Windows XP or Vista, please check the sources links below)

  1. Open System Restore by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  2. Follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point and restore your computer.
    1. Click Next
    2. Select a Date/Time in the grid, then click Next
    3. Then Click Finish
  3. Your computer will then Restart itself.
  4. When your computer reboots, it will say the System Restore was successful
