Automotive Car Tech @ CES

Alight...were to begin...

Lexus Autonomous Advanced Active Safety Research Vehicle

Toyota is testing  their Lexus 600 that is equipped with Advanced GPS, radar, laser ranger-finders, super-precise odometer, accelerometers and stereo cameras all to help it navigate.  It can all tell the between red/green lights.  However, with all of this equipment, its no designed to be a self-driving car. Jim Pisz of Toyota explains Autonomous does not mean driverless... technology should enhance a driver's skills, but we do believe that the technology is at a state where it can intervene in a case where driver error is absolutely evident.  Anyways, Toyota goes on to say that they are not yet ready for the self-driving car.  However, that doesn't go with say that self-driving isn't ready for us.  It's more on the line, are we ready for the self-driving car?

QNX w/ AT&T Watson Speech Recongition
QNX wants to to put an end to those in-car voice systems that required to say commands like 'Say number or contacts name' 'Did you say?' 'Say yes to dial or back to go back.' Those annoying things.  So with AT&T's Watson engine, QNX will build a new speech system that will be bring more organic conversations with our car.  We should see something from QNX sometime this year.

TI Automotive Infotainment
Texas Instruments having been working with their new DLP technology and moving from phones to now in-car infotainment systems.  TI thinks DLP is a perfect fit for cars because it delivers higher brightness, wider field of view and better color reproduction than competing display technologies, and it can be used in curved displays. The infotainment will run with two Cortex A15 cores, tow Cortex M4 cores and PowerVR SGX-544 graphics.  We probably won't see the first release until 2014.   Check out the demo video below.

Garmin K2 Automotive Infotainment
TI ain't the only one that wants be your next gen in-car infotainment.  Their system will bring your multiple displays and advance avionic, offering you the ultimate glass cockpit experience.  The main system will have a 10-in touch screen, with a highly customization 12-in panel behind the steering well. That second display is where you'll find all the essential gauges, but it also provides navigation, vehicle info, along with communications, including text messages and email, and more info on whatever music you're currently playing. K2 is powered by a dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 processor with the ability to feed content to multiple screens, including some for passengers in the back. Also to be present is 3D Navigation, gas prices, traffic and weather all in real time and smartphone controls.

iHeartRadio and Slacker Radio
iHeartRadio will be coming to Chrysler and GM automobiles.  While Slacker Radio will be coming to Chrysler's UConnect.

NVIDIA @ CES - Tegra 4, Project Shield & Weird CEO

Okay, besides NVIDIA having their keynote at 9PM in the evening on Sunday (who has a keynote conference that late?) and the fact that they were basically revealing old news, things got a bit strange on stage with the CEO...But first, headlines!

TEGRA 4

NVIDIA officially announced the Tegra 4 chip, claiming to be the 'World's Fastest Mobile Processor.' It's packing 72 GeForce GPU cores.  First quad-core with Cortex A15 cores. With an optional chip, it'll be compatible with LTE.

The Tegra 4 will also enable 4K ultra high-definition video support, as well as PRISM 2 display tech that claims to reduce the power used by the backlight. Doing so will result in a 45 percent decrease in power consumption when compared to Tegra 3.

Project Shield

The CEO also announced Project Shield   This is Nvidia's Tegra 4, Andriod powered gaming handel device.

Specs:
  • NVIDIA Tegra 4 (72-core NVIDIA GeFroece GPU Quad-core A15 CPU)
  • Controller - Full-sized console grade controller
  • 5-in 720p retina Multi-touch display for high fidelity visuals
  • Custom, bass-reflex, tuned port audio system delivers fidelity and custom range never before experienced on a portable device
  • 802.11n 2x2 MIMO game-speed Wi-Fi provides high-bandwidth, ultra-fast wireless for seamless game streaming
  • Stocked Android Jelly Bean
Project SHIELD gives you the power to wirelessly access your GeForce® GTX-powered computer from the comfort of your couch. Play your favorite PC games, including great titles from Steam, on a full-size game controller with ultra-low latency thanks to Project SHIELD's game-speed Wi-Fi and the fast performance of GeForce GTX 600 GPUs.

Things got a little weird...

Besides having several technical difficulties and not remembering some things, the CEO was demonstrating the new HDR camera that works with their officially announced Tegra 4 chip (The Tegra 4 also introduces new computational photography architecture, which adds a new engine to drive the image processing and significantly improve the amount of time it takes to calculate the necessary mathematics 10 times faster than current platforms.).

The CEO changed on stages into a leather jacket in one segment and later called over a lady assistant to pose with him as if they were at beach.  An employee to a photo with what appeared to be a test Windows 8 tablet running the Tegra 4 chip, showing how fast it processed it (0.2 seconds) and upload time for a full-res copy.  OK? So how is this weird.   Look at several of these comments from some notable tech reports who were at the event...

Galaxy S4 To Be Revealed @ CES 2013?

CES 2013 is just around the corner, and tech news outlets are preparing for the bomb shell of newly announced tech toys and gadgets.  But, what is this about the Galaxy S4 being reveled at CES?  I mean, wasn't the Galaxy S3 just released 7 months ago? (I know, sounds long, but really hasn't been!)

Anyways, Samsung will NOT be announcing the new Galaxy S4 at CES.  INSTEAD, it has been reported that Jay Lee of Samsung will be at CES  showing the progress that has been made on the S4 to several of his partners behind closed doors.

Samsung doesn't typically announced a new flagship at CES, it usually waits until Mobile World Congress in February or they may do a press conference like they did back in May 2012 when they officially announced the S3, so they can get all the media attention.

What do we know so far about Samsung's upcoming Galaxy flagship phone.  Well, reports have it that it will have a 5-inch screen, 1080p AMOLED display and powered by the ARM Cortex A15 w/ Enynos 5440.  Anyways, if we do hear anything about the S4, details of it may be leaked out next week, or possibly February,  but more likely in April.
